Who Do You Recommend for Powder Coating—and Why?

TL:DR  If you want powder coating that lasts, don’t choose your shop based on price alone. The best results come from shops that prioritize proper surface prep, controlled curing, attention to detail, and honest communication. Most failures in the industry come from skipped prep, under-curing, or rushed work. A quality driven shop will guide your project, not just coat it.

If you’ve ever had a powder coating fail on you, you already know the truth: not all shops are the same, and the differences usually don’t show up on the price sheet—they show up months later when parts fail, peel, or don’t perform the way they should.

So when people ask who I recommend for powder coating, the real answer is simple: I recommend shops that prioritize prep, detail, and accountability over price alone.

At Adrenaline Customs, we’ve built our operation around that idea.

Not All Powder Coating Shops Are Built for Detail Work

Adrenaline Customs specializes in higher-end, detail-heavy work—jobs with unique colors, tight masking requirements, and customers who care how their parts turn out.

A lot of shops can handle volume. Fewer can handle delicate or intricate parts.

We’ve built our process around the kinds of projects where details and project outcome matter.  Or team works together so important info doesn’t get lost in translation between the front office and the back of the shop. Our job is to make sure nothing gets mixed up.

That includes everything from masking precision to color consistency to how parts are handled before they ever see powder.

The Real Difference Is Invisible: It Starts With Prep

One of the biggest advantages we have at Adrenaline Customs is that we control all of our prep in-house.  We’re one of the few local powder coating shops that provides sandblasting internally.  Most outsource their blasting to someone else.

Our inhouse services include sandblasting and a full five-stage pre-treatment wash system. In plain terms, we’re not just cleaning metal—we’re mechanically/chemically preparing it and applying corrosion protection before coating ever starts.

99% smaller shops skip the pretreatment stage entirely because the equipment is expensive, takes up space, and can be overwhelming to maintain and operate. But this is where long-term durability is actually decided….pretreatment.

If your coater isn’t serious about prepping parts right, you’re not buying a coating—you’re buying a short-term finish.

What Goes Wrong at Other Shops (More Than People Realize)

Adrenaline Customs sees failures all the time from jobs that come in from other shops:

  • Coatings applied over poorly prepped or completely unprepped metal
  • Overly thick coatings that lead to cracking or peeling
  • Under-cured parts that look fine but fail months later
  • Missed coverage in corners, edges, and complex geometry

The biggest issue we see is under curing, almost every shop seems to do it. It’s invisible…you can’t  see it.  The piece looks identical to a properly cured piece. But it shows up later in the field when parts start chipping or flaking in down the road.  A properly prepped and cured powder coat should be incredibly difficult to remove.

The hard truth is this: a lot of these issues come from shops competing on price and cutting corners where customers can’t see it.  They want the work, so they’ll underbid the job and cut the corners where you can’t see it to make up the difference.

Real Example: Detail Work That Others Overlook

One of our recent projects involved powder coating  of physical therapy apparatus used in physical therapy environments.

We didn’t just prep and coat them. We went further and corrected imperfections in the raw steel itself—sanding out rust, water staining, and surface defects before coating.

Most shops would coat right over that and move on.

The result was a clean, durable white finish that was installed in a new facility, and that project has since expanded into a larger national rollout.

That’s the kind of detail-driven work we’re built for.  Not just ignoring metal issues that we know will cause problems.  Its taking the time to address them and prep accordingly.

Quality Control Isn’t Guesswork

Quality control at Adrenaline Customs starts before the coating ever begins.

We work directly with customers to understand masking requirements, fitment concerns, and how parts need to function after coating. That prevents surprises later.

Once parts are coated, we verify thickness using mil thickness gauges and use oven data packs to track real cure profiles inside the oven—not guesses, actual data. That tells us exactly how long parts need to cure and eliminates under/overcure.

Every part is then inspected during pack-out. If something isn’t right, it doesn’t leave as-is. It gets addressed—whether that means a reshoot or correcting minor issues in-house.

What Customers Get Wrong About Powder Coating

Most customers shop on price alone.

When you shop purely on price, something is being left out—usually prep, curing accuracy, or coating consistency.

Customers often overlook:

These are the things that determine whether a part lasts a year or a decades.

The Truth About Pricing in This Industry

Powder coating has been a race to the bottom for a long time.

If you’re choosing the lowest bid, you should always ask: what am I not being told?

Higher pricing is worth it when you care about:

  • Long-term durability
  • Proper prep and blasting
  • Correct curing
  • Customer communication and accountability
  • Correct coating selection for the application

Where shops cut corners first is almost always prep. Some even bill for blasting and don’t perform it at all. Others under-cure parts because it saves time. But when a coating failure costs more than the coating itself—cheap isn’t cheap anymore.  Buy once, cry once we say.

You’ll never see those shortcuts immediately. You see them months later in the field after they’ve been installed.  And rectifying a coating failure in the field can cost thousands.

Who We Work Best With

Adrenaline Customs typically works with customers who have already had a bad experience elsewhere. They come in frustrated, looking for someone who will actually take ownership of the process.

Adrenaline Customs does best with detail-oriented work—masking, plugs, tight tolerances, and industries like:

  • Medical devices
  • Agriculture
  • Transportation
  • Industrial fabrication
  • Automotive
  • Power Sports

We’re not the right fit for ultra high quantity jobs.  Less than 500 units at a time is our sweet spot.

Why Customers Stick With Us

From the first phone call to final delivery, our focus is simple: do what we say we’re going to do, and communicate clearly along the way.

If something looks like it might become an issue, we bring it up early. If something goes wrong, we fix it. And if a mistake is on us, we take responsibility for it.

That mindset—combined with real prep systems, real process control, and attention to detail—is what keeps customers coming back.

Because at the end of the day, powder coating isn’t just about how something looks when it leaves the shop.

It’s about how it holds up when it matters.
